Time Management
Time Management: Finding your rhythm
Are you a procrastinator? What are your time management skills like? Come and learn which study method to choose, good habits of effective time managers, how to set goals, and how to assess your time management skills. This workshop will give you tips on how to be an effective time manager and a successful student at Washington State University.
Learning Styles
What’s my learning style?
College instruction is far more challenging than what many students have previously experienced. Students must first understand how they learn in order to improve and increase memory and comprehension, tools that enhance learning and academic success. In this session, students will learn about individual learning styles related to classroom lectures, general study patterns, and test-taking strategies.
Learning Skills for Science
Whether you want to be a science major or are just working on your science GER’s, this workshop will guide you through strategies to use in your science courses. There will be an opportunity for questions about specific topics as well as specific tips to take with you.
Learning Outside the Lines
While many students study alike, in much the same way, others may do things differently. Students with unique learning styles often discover innovative study strategies that increase their success in college. This session focuses on different approaches and tips that help students make the most of their individual learning differences.
Winning at Math
This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to learn more about specific strategies and approaches to their math courses. There will be an opportunity for questions about specific topics as well as specific tips to take with you.
Note-Taking, Reading & Memorization
Note-Taking Strategies
There’s more than one way to take notes and many students new to college find ways that may be better than methods they previously used. This college success workshop will teach students how to better identify and understand the different lecture styles used by faculty. Additionally, students will learn different note-taking methods to improve the structure and organization of study materials as well as different study strategies.
Reading for Mastery/Memorization
Successful college performance depends upon holistic thinking about the academic subject—not just repeating back what you’ve heard or read. In this session, students will learn how to use college textbooks as research tools. Students will improve memory and comprehension of the content through learning-specific reading strategies.
Test Taking
Tips on Test Taking
Learn ways to enhance your study skills before a test, and how to improve your test taking skills during exams. Test taking tips for different types of exams will be addressed as well as how to minimize test anxiety. You will also learn how to create an effective study plan that allows you to study smarter, not just study more.
Taking Essay Exams
Students will learn how to prepare for an essay exam by understanding the terms used by instructors, tips on how to study, and how to correctly prepare an outline for the final essay. Participants of this workshop will understand how an essay exam differs in terms of study time preparation, learn various essay word definitions and how to use this information when writing the essay exam and be able to set up an outline for an essay exam.
Managing Test Anxiety
The Test Anxiety Workshop provides a wide variety of strategies for managing test anxiety. Strategies to be presented will include test preparation skills, study skills, time-management skills, and test-taking skills as well as relaxation strategies and suggestions for maintenance of self care.”
Finals Preparation
Life in college—and the ‘real world’—sinks or swims with the ability to understand what needs to be done as well as the ability to manage the time needed to get it done. Nowhere is this more intense that mid-terms and finals! This session will focus on planning and organization skills that help students balance their academic time and tasks with real life, and provide tips for navigating intense testing times successfully.
Writing, Reading & Research Writing
Portfolio Workshop
This workshop will explain how to complete the Writing Portfolio. We will discuss tips for the timed essay as well as papers students select for the portfolio packet. Discussions will range from types of papers accepted to contacting instructors for signatures. This is a great workshop for students just reaching the 60th credit hour as well as new transfer students.
Understanding Writing Assignments
The Understanding Writing Assignments workshop focuses on interpreting writing assignments and “mapping out” possible responses. By identifying key tasks associated with writing assignments, students begin the writing process through a variety of brainstorming and outlining activities. This workshop supplies students with frameworks for interpreting assignments and allows students to formulate clear directions in their writing.
Proofreading and Editing Papers
In the Proofreading & Editing Papers workshop, students look at techniques and strategies for addressing their papers at the sentence level. While grammar is discussed—mostly in terms of punctuation and common errors—we contextualize proofreading and editing within greater order issues (e.g. focus, organization, etc), as well as the drafting process.
Academic Integrity: Plagiarism, Cheating & Other No No’s
Do you understand the basic types of academic dishonesty and the university consequences concerning such violations? This workshop will address these issues and also provide focused discussion about plagiarism and citation.
Writing & Research
The writing portion of this workshop focuses on the writing process, beginning with prewriting then moving on to the development of ideas using the critical thinking rubric and ending with University resources that can aid in final drafting and editing.

This presentation will cover the variety of campus resources available to students - from tutoring services to campus involvement. Students will also learn more about what is available to them on the WSU website as well as other helpful college resources on the web.

How do I find out what I’m interested in studying or doing as a future career? Learn about a variety of assessment tests available through Career Services to see which test could assist you in identifying and researching a potential major, minor, and future career.

How do I go about deciding on a major and future career? Are you looking for a way to help you identify a major and/or future career? Deciding on a major/career workshop is designed to assist you with obtaining information about strategies and resources to help you navigate through your decision making process. You also are able to take an assessment test, which is a great way to discover a potential major and future careers suitable to your interests and personality.

Are you looking for another major to pursue? Find out about strategies and resources to help you redirect your efforts to locate another major. Get back on track by taking an assessment test to help you discover or validate your notions for a plan “B”.
Making the Most of Academic Advising
This workshop will provide valuable information on how to prepare for advising appointments, assess your aptitudes and interests, and gather relevant information that affects your educational goals. Career development packets will be distributed.
